Island Tourism Festival, Port Blair – Amalgamating all the Colours of the Island

A festival bringing together all the colours of the island, Island Tourism festival is a collective celebration
of all the residents of Andaman and Nicobar Island usually celebrated on the months of December or January. The 10 day long festival exhibits the culture and tradition, arts and crafts, flora and fauna, marine life, dance of several forms and is one of the major tourism enhancers for the island. As a result, large number of tourists visits the island and the capital city of Port Blair which is the venue of this festivity.

The opening function is broadcast live on DD Bharati and is beamed for broadcast in many other countries. All the vents are organized by the Andaman and Nicobar Administration with participation from all the islanders. In true sense, this festival gives a festive look to the islands projecting a depiction of an eco-friendly tourist destination in the eye of every visitor.

History: Despite being part of India, the Andaman and Nicobar Island are very far from the mainland of India. The people living in these islands are from varied parts of India thus the collective harmony and the festivities differ from the mainland of India. Numerous activities are celebrated by the residents of these islands to get together and to celebrate the island and its inhabitants. Among many of the festival celebrated by the people of Andaman and Nicobar Island, Island Tourism festival is the one which is celebrated in the capital city of Port Blair with participation from all the people.

Celebrations Venue:

The main celebrations are taken place in the ITF Ground of Port Blair, however small programmes are also organized in several other places like Wandoor, Neil, Rangat, Havelock, Diglipur, Car Niconor and many other places. During the programme the entire ground of ITF swells with people from across the globe who visits the island to witness the spectacular grandiose of the islanders during the festival. The Netaji Stadium also in Port Blair is another venue for mega shows.

Main Activities and Celebrations:

As the festivity is aim to promote tourism ion the island, the festivities has lot to offer to the visitors and the tourists during the 10 day long extravaganza. The major activities during the festival include food festivals, canoe racing, Nicobari Hodi race, magic show, floating restaurant, dog and baby shows, and puppet shows, along with the arrangements for aqua sports and parasailing which are arranged to please the visitors.

However the major attraction of the festival is the performance of the national and international artists especially the reputed Bollywood singers, dancers, renowned music bands from overseas countries etc. which attracts large number of domestic as well as international visitors. Hasya Kavisammelan (Laughing poetry mass) is also organized to delight the crowd. Artists from east zone and south zone are also invited by the cultural department of the island to take part in a competition where they can exhibit their culture and tradition.
